Description
After decades spent in the purgatory of the communist dictat, Józef Wittlin is beginning to enjoy the eminent status he deserves in Polish and world literature. A remarkable revival of interest in Wittlin’s writings is taking place, not only in Poland, but also internationally–with the publication of new translations of his essays, of his classic novel, The Salt of Earth (once nominated for a Nobel Prize), and his poetry which is our subject here.
The translations collected in this anthology are, for the most part, the first translations into English of the poems concerned. Almost fifty years after the poet’s death in New York, his work is presented in English in a comprehensive form, offering an insight into Józef Wittlin’s contribution to world poetry in the twentieth century.
